Well, look at what my crafty mom has been up to! I cannot crochet more than a chain stitch which gets me nothing but a long fat piece of yarn, and knitting needles would be more useful to me as chopsticks, but my mom is so talented (and frugal), she knitted herself a swiffer broom cover that can be washed instead of buying the refills which earns her an A+ on frugality! I personally have never bought into the swiffers because I think they are a scam to get you to keep purchasing their refill do-hickeys. Maybe I'd change my tune if my crafty mom made me a couple of covers. This is for the dry swiffer, not the wet one.
She got her pattern from this book:

Then she found
this website that has 15 different patterns for the same thing! Amazing! Who would have thought?
We were on the phone together when she swept up with it (after sweeping and mopping that morning) and she said, "you would not believe how much dirt this just picked up!" and sends me this picture of the dirt pile and the bottom of the swiffer:
And I say, That's it??? That's all the dirt you had on your floor 5 hours after mopping???? Oh yeah, she has no kids or dogs at home . . .

I can crochet, but not knit very well. I've seen directions on how to crochet those covers also. I dont' have a swiffer so I don't need any covers. But they do look handy and more environmentally friendly then the trhrowaway covers

I have never bought into the swiffer thing for the same reason - it chains you to a lifetime of buying replacement cloths! Yuck!
I can't knit, but I can crochet, so I'm interested to see the crochet patterns...

Very cool. Aint never gonna happen here though. And yeah, I wish my floors looked like that in 5 hours, more like 5 seconds....if I'm lucky.
I bought my swiffer $1 at a garage sale, and after buying one package of refills, said "That's enough." So now I tie kitchen towels over it, wet mop, and throw the towels in the washer. I also have some kitchen towels I velcroed to stay in place. Much more money friendly than the refills. Will try to crochet one now tho - these looked interesting.
Did she use cotton yarn or a polyester or nylon one?
It's cotton. I used up some leftovers from when I was ambitious and knitted dish cloths. It would be fun to use lots of different colors.

Oh, my gosh, this is on my list now to do. I love my swiffer sweepers and mop but, hate to buy the refills, even if I do buy them at Costco. This would be so easy on the knitting machine and to make a few at a time. Thanks for the idea!! I love it! Does she sell them? She should!! and to think you can make them out of all kinds of different materials...You got me going. But, this is a project that I have moved to the top of the list!
