Huh? Pure Powdered Sugar

A while ago I bought powdered sugar at our local store where the good brand (C&H) is more expensive than the cheap brand by a very large margin, so I was forced by my frugality to buy the cheap brand because I couldn't stomach the amount they were charging for the good stuff.

Now I remember why I get the good stuff (this is the other brand):
Could someone please explain to me how "PURE" powdered sugar contains sugar AND cornstarch? This made a noticable change in the taste of my favorite chocolate frosting today--very disappointing.

Only have to suffer through another bag and a half of this ick before I'm back to the real stuff. Or maybe I'll save the unopened bag for barter . . .

I'd always heard it was added to keep the sugar from caking- so maybe they went a little overboard in the ratio of cornstarch to sugar in the off-brand.

Serems like false labeling to me! Makes me wonder what they meant by "Pure" as well...!

According to Bon Appetite, all powdered sugar has about 3% corn starch to prevent caking.

Cornstarch is also listed on the C&H label.

Okay, I'll have to check the label on the C&H--I don't have any on hand right now, but I never noticed it saying corn starch, and the texture is noticably different between the two brands, so I guess if C&H has corn starch in it also, maybe it's not so much or it's processed differently. Are there rules about at what percentage of a product an ingredient has to be listed on the label? Or if it's there even in small amounts does it have to be on the label? Learn something new every day . . . :)

I make powdered sugar at home and I add cornstarch. Put 1c sugar in a blender on high speed for 3 minutes. Add 1 tbs cornstarch and viola! Powdered sugar at reg sugar prices :)

Hmmmm I'll have to check mine. I'd take the un-opened package back and tell them you don't like it. They should refund your price. I usually get my from bulk at Winco.

I think that is a cool idea to blend sugar in a blender. I'm going to have to check that out.

the term pure sugar means ts pure cane sugar with no beet sugar

I think this needs more research. I always thought if it was cane sugar, it said it on the label (ie c & h pure cane sugar) and if it didn't say anything, that it was beet sugar (which they have started genetically modifying so I try not to buy it anymore).
